Welcome to Centre of Excellence for Literacy Education Online

The Centre of Excellence for Literacy Education (CELE) was set up to address the urgent needs of making the generality of Nigerians see literacy as a critical and vital tool for promoting national development and for actualizing Nigerian national educational goals. CELE believes that without literacy empowerment, no success can be achieved in any level of the Nigerian educational system. Thus apart from promoting advocacy regarding literacy at the formal and non-formal school system, CELE strives to model and promote best practices in literacy and literacy education within the non-formal and formal education system in Nigeria.

CELE as a matter of fact is an offspring of Ile-Ife Teachers Applying Whole Language Group who tried to use the whole-language literacy enhancement paradigm in promoting literacy in the Ile-Ife metropolis where it operated. Having participated in some Whole Language Umbrella Conventions from 1994 to 2005, the leadership of the Teachers Applying Whole Language (TAWL) in Ile-Ife, were convinced that they had something to offer to the various agencies promoting literacy in Nigeria. Since both the membership and leadership of TAWL in Ile-Ife also support the use of other paradigms for promoting literacy in the country, they decided that CELE was an appropriate body that can enable it to share its ideas and ideals as well as learn from others. That is why in 2000 the TAWL group in Ife metamorphosed into CELE. Thus by the unanimous decision of the leadership and membership of the Ile-Ife TAWL, CELE was registered with the Nigerian Corporate Affairs Commission as a legal entity.
